Explore the confidence that comes from seeing real-life impact in teaching AI.
Empower educators to build and automate their own resources, moving beyond reliance on external tools.
Do Now
Consider your comfort level with AI and automation. If you could create your own automated workflows and tools, what would you build first to make your work easier?
What We’re Discussing Today
This past month, I ran a small but powerful experiment: a 30-day AI and automation course designed for my friend and fellow educator, Jenn. The course was meant to take her from knowing little about AI to feeling confident in automating tasks and using digital tools to streamline her work. Here’s what I learned by building and testing this course with her—and why I believe every educator can (and should) start building their own solutions.
This is Jenn teaching her extensive support needs special day class (grades 3-5)
I Do, We Do, You Do
I Do: Building a Course in Record Time
When Jenn said, “Teach me,” I dove in and built out the course in a matter of days. Forced accountability pushed me to get it done, removing the usual excuses about prep time or perfecting each detail. It taught me that sometimes we hold ourselves back with unnecessary obstacles—like worrying about how we look on camera or feeling like we’re not “ready.” I recorded videos, built automations on the spot, and found that I actually knew this content well enough to teach it naturally.
Seeing Jenn go from minimal knowledge of AI to creating her own automations made this journey worth every moment. On one of the last days of the course, she showed me a successful automation she had built herself, with only one minor adjustment needed. That was the moment I knew this was bigger than just a course; it was proof that teachers can master these tools and use them to solve problems in real time.
We Do: Educators Building Their Own Tools Together
Testing this course on Jenn wasn’t just about teaching one person; it was about validating a larger vision. Through her feedback, I made some changes to the format and delivery. The course was originally a simple Google Sheets database with Make.com automations, but for future versions, I’m shifting to a Gumroad setup to better handle automated enrollments.
What excites me most is how much Jenn has achieved in 30 days. She can now automate her weekly newsletter, bulk-create content in Canva, and is eager to keep building. We’ll be presenting together at the ACSA Every Child Counts Symposium in January, using real-life examples to show how automation is impacting her students. It’s inspiring to see how quickly educators can learn and use these skills in ways that truly matter.
You Do: Empower Yourself with AI and Automation
For any educator interested in this course, here’s what I want you to know: You can do this. AI and automation are accessible, and they hold the power to transform how you work. Don’t wait for tech companies to build solutions for you; you’re more than capable of creating tools that fit your exact needs. This course wasn’t built by a tech expert—it was built by an educator, for educators, with the understanding that you are highly capable and intelligent and can do this just as well as anyone else.
If you’re tired of waiting for solutions that “pass the sniff test,” it’s time to start creating your own. I didn’t dumb down any part of the course, and I don’t believe in underestimating your skills. This journey isn’t about knowing everything from the start; it’s about feeling empowered to learn, build, and grow in your own way. I want you to experience the thrill of seeing an automation work or a chatbot respond as you designed it. That empowerment is what this course is all about.
Think about one repetitive task in your classroom that could be automated. How would it help if you could build a solution tailored just for that need?
Pair up with a colleague and discuss the potential of AI and automation to save time and enhance creativity in teaching. This is about accountability—talk about what you want to do and it’ll provide the momentum to get you started.
Share your thoughts about how you see AI making a difference in education. Let’s support each other in building, learning, and innovating.
