#29 Attention, Please! Your AI Focus Assistant Has Entered the Chat 🔊

Harness the power of AI to create personalized focus tools and concentration-boosting resources

Lesson Objectives

  • Learn how to create AI-generated binaural beats for focus enhancement

  • Discover LLM prompts that can boost concentration and productivity

  • Explore ways to implement these tools in educational settings

Do Now

Before we get started, take a moment to close your eyes and take three deep breaths. Notice the quality of your attention right now. Are you focused, scattered, or somewhere in between? Keep this awareness as we explore tools to enhance concentration.

What We’re Working with Today

Today we'll explore how Large Language Models can help create personalized focus tools, from generating binaural beats to crafting concentration prompts. These AI approaches can revolutionize how you, your staff, and/or your students maintain attention during challenging tasks and complex learning activities.

I Do, We Do, You Do

I Do: Here’s What I Created

This week, I discovered something mind-blowing: you can ask Claude to create a binaural beats generator to help with focus! I found this tweet from @PromptLLM that opened up a whole new world of possibilities:

I tried this out myself and was amazed by how Claude created a sophisticated React component that generates actual binaural beats. The focus-enhancing sounds helped me power through coding, working on the data drilldown portion of CIM for CCEIS, and speed-iterating on an app for IEP Implementation with heightened concentration.

Tools I used:

  • Claude 3.7 Sonnet Extended Thinking

We Do: Let’s Build This Together

Follow this step-by-step guide to create your own focus tools with AI:

1. Create a Binaural Beats Generator

Try this prompt with Claude (use Sonnet 3.7 with Extended thinking):

Create a binaural beats generator as a React component that can help with focus and concentration. Include controls for frequency, beat frequency, volume, and a timer. Make it visually calming with a minimalist design and soft colors. Add a brief explanation of how binaural beats work for focus enhancement.

2. Generate a Personalized Focus Mantra

Use this prompt to get a customized focus mantra:

I need help creating a personal focus mantra. My biggest distraction challenges are [describe your specific challenges, e.g., "social media, interrupting thoughts, and environmental noise"]. I prefer mantras that are [short/rhythmic/metaphorical]. My work involves [describe your work]. Please create 3 potential focus mantras I can repeat when I need to concentrate, along with a brief breathing technique to pair with each.

3. Design a Progressive Focus Session

Try this prompt to create a structured focus session:

Help me design a progressive focus session for [specific task, e.g., "grading essays" or "creating lesson plans"]. I have [time amount] available and tend to lose focus after [time period]. Include warming up, peak focus utilization, strategic breaks, and cool down. Also suggest environmental adjustments and preparation rituals that can maximize concentration.

4. Create a Focus Emergency Kit

When you need immediate help getting back on track:

I need a "focus emergency kit" for when I'm completely scattered but need to concentrate immediately. Please create a 5-minute reset protocol with quick physical, mental, and environmental interventions that can help me regain focus rapidly. Include variations for different environments (classroom, office, home, public space).

You Do: Your Mini Task for the Week

Now it's your turn! Choose one of the prompts above and customize it for your specific needs. Try it out for at least three different work sessions this week. Notice which elements help you focus most effectively and which might need adjustment.

For a bonus challenge: If you’re a teacher, create a student-friendly version of one of these focus tools and introduce it to your class. Observe how it affects their concentration levels.

Think-Pair-Share

  • Think of 3 situations where you or your students struggle most with focus and concentration

  • Pair up with a colleague to discuss which AI-generated focus tools might help in those specific scenarios

  • Share your experiences with our community of educators and connect with other Edumators who are transforming their classrooms with AI and automation.
