#17 I Asked AI to Be My Valentine and It Generated Math Problems Instead 💘

Transform lesson planning from time-consuming to inspiring in minutes

Lesson Objectives

  • Master AI prompts for creating differentiated Valentine's-themed learning materials

  • Save 3-4 hours on holiday activity planning while maintaining educational rigor

  • Design inclusive classroom celebrations that work for ALL students

  • Learn templates you can modify for future holiday activities

Do Now

Before we get started, take a moment to reflect on past Valentine's Day experiences in your classroom. What worked? What didn't? How much time did you spend creating materials? Keep these experiences in mind as we explore how AI can transform your approach to holiday learning activities.

What We’re Working with Today

Today we'll harness the power of AI to create Valentine's-themed educational content that's not just cute—it's meaningful, inclusive, and standards-aligned. No more late nights cutting out paper hearts or searching for worksheets that only work for half your class. We're going to create materials that celebrate all types of love: friendship, family, community, and self-care.

I Do, We Do, You Do

I Do: Here’s What I Created

As a former math teacher and current nerd, this week, I challenged myself to create a complete Valentine's Day math unit in under 30 minutes using this powerful prompt:

You are a curriculum designer specializing in inclusive, multicultural education. Create 5 Valentine's-themed word problems for [GRADE LEVEL] math that:

1. Incorporate diverse names and cultural celebrations of friendship/love from around the world
2. Address [SPECIFIC MATH STANDARD]
3. Include real-world applications
4. Feature varying difficulty levels
5. Avoid romantic themes, focusing instead on friendship, family love, and community care

For each problem, include:
- The problem text
- The solution with step-by-step explanation
- Accommodation and modification suggestions for 1) students 1-2 grade levels behind, 2) students 3+ levels behind, and 3) students with extensive support needs
- A challenge extension for advanced learners

Please ask me clarifying questions until you are 95% certain that you can provide me with expert-level guidance on this task. Thank you.

Tools I used:

  • Claude

  • Canva for visual elements

  • Google Docs for organization

You can adjust this prompt for any subject and any topic. The more detailed you are when answering the LLM’s questions, the better quality the results will be. While this can be used with any LLM, I have found that Claude does the best job for me on creative tasks where I prompt it to ask me questions.

We Do: Let’s Build This Together

Follow this step-by-step guide to create your own inclusive Valentine's Day activities:

  1. Start with the prompt above, but customize it for your grade level and standards

  2. Take the AI's output and refine it – remember, you're the expert on your students

  3. Use Canva's education templates to create visually appealing worksheets

  4. Create a simple rubric to ensure activities align with your learning objectives

Pro tip: Save all prompts and outputs in a Google Doc or Notion page for future reference and refinement.

You Do: Your Mini Task for the Week

Now it's your turn! Let’s take this one step further. Use this template to create your own inclusive celebration plan:

Act as an inclusive classroom activities specialist. Design a Valentine's Day celebration plan that:

1. Centers around the theme of [choose: friendship/kindness/community]
2. Is appropriate for [GRADE LEVEL]
3. Accommodates students who:
   - May not celebrate holidays
   - Have different cultural backgrounds
   - Have sensory sensitivities
   - Are learning English

Include:
- A 30-minute activity outline
- Required materials
- Modifications for different learning needs
- Assessment opportunities aligned with [SUBJECT] standards
- Parent communication template
- Alternative activities for students who don't participate

Format your response as a ready-to-implement lesson plan with clear sections and bullet points. Ask me clarifying questions until you are 95% certain that you can provide expert-level guidance on this very important task.
