Intentional Career Planning for Educators: AI-Assisted Goal Setting and Opportunity Recognition
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this newsletter, you'll be able to:
Recognize when it's time to make a strategic career move in education
Use AI to assess your current role alignment with your professional goals
Create a 3-5 year career advancement plan using AI-powered reflection tools
Identify growth opportunities within and beyond your current position
Do Now
Before we get started, take a moment to think about where you were professionally three years ago. Are you in the exact same role, doing the exact same tasks, with the exact same challenges? If so, this newsletter is especially for you. There's nothing wrong with stability, but there's everything right with intentional growth.
What We’re Working with Today
Today we'll explore how to break free from the "comfortable plateau" that keeps many educators in the same position for years or even decades. We'll use AI to help you honestly assess whether you're growing or just going through the motions, and create a strategic plan for your next career move.
I Do, We Do, You Do
I Do: Here’s What I Created
Let’s be honest, it’s the 3-year itch for me. When I first heard the term 7-year itch, I thought 7 years?! I’m restless after two, honestly, and three is where I start reflecting and searching.
This past week, I coded a Data Drilldown Dashboard with my district’s CCEIS data. It has a dashboard section with insights and a visualization section with five tabs, each with multiple graphs of our district data (focusing on Hispanic SLD, our area of significant disproportionality).
Tools I used: Lovable for the initial UI and project structure, Gemini in AI Studio as my project manager and coder, VS Code as my IDE, and GitHub Desktop.
We Do: Let’s Build This Together
Follow this step-by-step guide to assess your career trajectory and plan your next strategic move:
Step 1: The Growth Reality Check
Use this prompt:
I've been in my current education role for [X years]. Help me analyze whether I'm still growing professionally. Ask me 5 probing questions, one at a time, about my daily responsibilities, new challenges I've faced recently, skills I've developed, and opportunities I've been given. Then provide an honest assessment of my growth trajectory.
Step 2: The 3-Year Vision Alignment
Use this prompt:
Based on my career goals of [insert your goals], analyze my current position. Is my current role moving me toward or away from these objectives? What specific steps should I take in the next 6 months to better align my daily work with my long-term vision?
Step 3: The Strategic Move Calculator
Use this prompt:
I'm considering a career move in education. Help me weigh the pros and cons by asking about: compensation growth potential, title advancement, skill development opportunities, work-life balance, and long-term career trajectory. Then recommend whether I should stay and advocate for changes, or begin looking for new opportunities.
Step 4: The Opportunity Recognition Audit
Use this prompt:
Review my current skills and experiences in education. What career opportunities might I be overlooking? What adjacent roles in education, edtech, curriculum development, or educational leadership could leverage my background? Help me identify 3 potential career paths I haven't considered.
You Do: Your Mini Task for the Week
Now it's your turn! Choose one of the four prompts above and have a honest conversation with AI about your current career situation. Set aside 30 minutes this week to really dig into your professional growth and trajectory.
Think of 3 skills you've developed in your current role and 3 skills you wish you were developing
